An Unforgettable Journey
By
Alison T. (2014-2016 Australia)
Q: Where do you come from?
A: I am from Hong Kong.
Q: When did you go on your working holiday?
A: From 2014 to 2016.
Q: Where did you go for your working holiday and why?
A: I went to Australia, a place where I have always wanted to go. My first stop was Brisbane and I also stayed in Sydney and Melbourne during my two-year working holiday.
Q: What kinds of jobs did you do, and what kinds of courses did you take during your working holiday?
A: I had been in Australia for two years and done several jobs. My first job was in Brisbane and it was about packing different kinds of vegetables and fruits ordered by the supermarkets. In order to gain a second visa, I moved to a farm later and picked and packed strawberries for four months. I had some great time there, not only because I had made good money but I met loads of good friends there and together we had good memories. During my second year in Australia, I moved to Sydney and worked as a process worker in the bacon section of a meat factory for six months. As time went by, I decided to move to Melbourne and got a packing job there. The job was about picking/ packing promotional materials for different companies.
Q: Tell us one of your most unforgettable memories in your working holiday.
A: I had lots of good memories in Australia. If I have to name the most unforgettable ones, it would be those four months working in the farm, picking strawberries no matter it was hot like burning or raining very heavily. It was tough but having lots of good friends working hard together will make it worth. I also tried many of my first times in Australia, for example skydiving (the most exciting thing I have done in my life so far) and camping at night while I could hear the kangaroos jumping next to my tent. All these memories will always be in my heart.
Q: What is the greatest reward you have got from your working holiday?
A: It would be those people I met in Australia. I feel lucky that I met lots of nice people and make good friends with them. They make me understand more about myself and allow me to discover my strengths and weaknesses.
Q: Can you give 3 tips for young people who wish to visit the working holiday destination of your choice?
A:
Q: Is there any extra thing you would like to tell us?
A: To be honest, do not have high expectation before you go there. There are so many uncertainties as you step out of your comfort zone and to live in another country that you know nothing about. Please also try your best on everything, and do not give up easily. After you decide to go, please expect that it will be not as easy as everyone else said, because they all gone through the hard part.

Q: Can you give 3 tips for young people who wish to visit the working holiday destination of your choice?
A:
1)
Do not stay in one state all the time or you will regret when you are back in Hong Kong.
2)
Be prepared that most of the jobs are physical work, but I will take that as jobs paying you for doing exercise in the gym.
3)
Do not always focus on getting a good job because working holiday is not only about working but holiday as well.
